Battleborn, published by 2K, had the misfortune of coming out around the same time as OverWatch last year. Battleborn released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in May 2016. Now Battleborn is switching up their payment-model in hopes to generate more revenue and players through their team shooter game.
The developers of Battleborn, Gearbox Studios, announced that the game will have a free-to-play option.
Unfortunately, Blizzard’s game Overwatch which garnered 30 million players created more hype than Battleborn. And even though they have their differences, both games are team-based shooters that feature a cast of comic-like characters. More people have invested time into playing Overwatch.
The Battleborn Free Trial gives players access to unlimited multiplayer matches in all of its competitive modes. Players will have access to a roster of six heroes, but can permanently unlock one of Battleborn’s 30 characters using in-game money or real-life currency. This payment model is most similar to games like League of Legends and Heroes of the Storm which have proven to be successful.
Now since Battleborn is free, perhaps this can breathe life into the team shooter with more players than before.
